About the campaign

#GoGrandMa

Across Africa, grandmothers have always been the quiet engines of generosity. They hold savings circles together. They keep the table full for the stranger. They raise children who are not their own. They lead — civically, spiritually, financially.

#GoGrandMa is part of GivingTuesday Africa's Grandmothers of Generosityinitiative. We are gathering 1,000 storiesfrom across the continent, and giving each grandmother a Title of Honour drawn from a vetted library of traditions — Ubuntu, Harambee, Teranga, Sankofa, Esusu, Stokvel, Ujamaa, Omoluabi, Letsema, Sadaqah. Her title may also be called her praise name.

Our principles

  • · Grandmothers are honoured as leaders, never as recipients of charity.
  • · Every praise name and meaning is drawn from a curated library, to be confirmed by fluent-speaker country leaders before publication. Until then, a "draft meaning" badge is shown.
  • · The "Echoes" line, when shown, names a verified woman of generosity from a small vetted Figures table. We never invent or paraphrase a figure's legacy.
  • · Nothing is auto-posted. Audio shoutouts are opt-in and reviewed.
  • · Submitters confirm permission to share each grandmother's name and story.

Draft notice: praise-name meanings on this site are working drafts and will be reviewed by fluent speakers from each tradition before publication.
